Your blood pressure cuff uses an aneroid (dial) gauge. Over time — or after being dropped or shipped — the needle can drift away from zero, which makes every reading inaccurate by the same amount. This quick check takes under a minute and requires only the small calibration tool(spanner) included with your gauge (a small spanner works).
1. Check the Zero Point
1.1. Make sure the cuff is fully deflated: open the valve on the inflation bulb completely and let all air escape.
1.2. Hold the gauge upright at eye level and look at the needle. It should rest inside the small zero-indicator box at the bottom of the dial (marked “mmHg”), at or within ±3 mmHg of zero.
1.3. If the needle sits inside the box — you’re done. No adjustment is needed.
2. Re-Zero the Needle (only if it’s off)
2.1. Locate the small calibration nut on the side of the gauge housing, next to the tubing connector.
2.2. Insert the calibration spanner tool into the port so it seats on the adjustment nut.
2.3. Turn the spanner slowly — small turns only — while watching the dial. Rotate until the needle moves back into the zero-indicator box.
3. Quick Function Check
3.1. Close the bulb valve and squeeze the bulb a few times. The needle should rise smoothly, without sticking or jumping.
3.2. Open the valve slowly. The needle should fall smoothly and return to rest inside the zero box.
Troubleshooting
- Needle won’t hold zero, sticks, or jumps during inflation → the gauge mechanism may be damaged and should be replaced rather than adjusted further.
- Needle rises but falls on its own with the valve closed → check tubing and bulb connections for air leaks.
- Adjust in small increments only — over-turning the calibration screw can overshoot zero or strain the mechanism.
Repeat this zero check before each lab session. Zeroing the gauge corrects offset error only — if you ever suspect readings are inaccurate across the scale, contact support for a replacement gauge.
